The incidence of celiac disease worldwide is represented graphically like an iceberg because a high percentage of celiac people are undiagnosed.
If we observe the Celiac Iceberg, the visible region above the water is 15-20% of the diagnosed patients. While in the most prominent fragment of the iceberg, the underwater part, we find that 80-85% of the undiagnosed patients.
The celiac iceberg also shows:
- There are 500,000 celiac people in Spain, although only 70% know it.
- The incidence of celiac disease increases by 7.5% per year.
- Only 1/7 of people are well-diagnosed.
